Best time of year to ride a motorbike around Dalat

Dalat is one of the few places in Vietnam where you can ride all year. It sits on the Lang Biang plateau at around 1,500 m, so it never gets properly hot, and even the rainy season mostly means an afternoon shower rather than a washed-out day. But the seasons do change what riding here feels like — and they matter much more once you head down to the coast.

Two seasons, not four

Dalat has a dry season and a rainy season, and the change between them is gradual rather than sudden.

• Dry season — roughly November or December to April. Clear mornings, blue skies, cool nights and very little rain. This is the busiest time for visitors.
• Rainy season — roughly May to October. Mornings are often bright; clouds build around midday and a heavy shower or storm follows in the afternoon. The wettest months are usually towards the end of the season, around August to October.

How warm is it?

Days are mild all year, typically in the high teens to low twenties °C, and rarely hot. The nights are the surprise for most visitors: from December to February it can drop to around 10 °C, and it feels colder on a bike at speed, especially early in the morning on a pass. In the rainy season it is a little warmer but damp, and being soaked and windblown at altitude chills you quickly.

The rule of thumb for riding: dress for the coldest part of the day you will be riding in, not for lunchtime in town.

Fog and cloud

Fog is common in Dalat, especially in the early morning and in the rainy season, and it sits thickest on the passes around the plateau — Prenn, Mimosa, Ta Nung and the long Khanh Le Pass towards Nha Trang. Visibility can drop to a few metres in minutes.

• Ride with your headlight on, even in daylight.
• Slow right down and keep well to your side of the road.
• If you really can't see, pull off somewhere safe, have a coffee and wait for it to lift. It usually does by mid-morning.

A clear or light-tinted visor helps; a dark visor in fog is dangerous.

The coast works differently

Once you leave the highlands, the calendar changes, and this matters for one-way rentals and multi-day rides.

• Nha Trang and the central coast get most of their rain later in the year, roughly October to December, with storms off the South China Sea. Hoi An and Da Nang follow a similar pattern and can flood in that period. See our Dalat to Nha Trang route guide for how this affects the Khanh Le Pass.
• Mui Ne and the south-central coast are among the driest places in Vietnam, and windy from about November to April.
• Ho Chi Minh City and the south have a wet season of roughly May to October, with short, heavy afternoon storms.

So a route that is perfect in March can be tricky in November. If you are planning a long ride, check the season at the far end as well as in Dalat.

Month by month, in short

• December to February: dry, clear and cold at night. Beautiful riding weather. Busy around Christmas, New Year and Tet (the Lunar New Year, in late January or February), when Vietnamese families travel too.
• March and April: dry, warmer, often the most comfortable months of all.
• May to July: the rains begin, mostly in the afternoon. Green, quieter, good riding if you start early.
• August to October: the wettest stretch in Dalat. Still rideable, but plan your riding for the morning and keep plans flexible.
• November: the rains ease off in Dalat, but the central coast is at its wettest — think twice about the passes towards Nha Trang.

Flowers and festivals

Dalat is famous for its flowers, and some seasons are especially good for them. Wild sunflowers (da quy) turn roadsides and hills yellow around November. Pink cherry blossoms (mai anh dao) usually appear around the turn of the year, into January and February. A flower festival is held in Dalat in December in some years. Tet brings decorations everywhere but also full hotels, higher demand for bikes, and some businesses closing for a few days — book ahead if you are coming then.

What to pack for riding around Dalat

• Warm layers: a fleece or light down jacket for mornings and evenings, even in the dry season.
• A proper waterproof for the rainy season. A rain poncho comes with every bike we rent, but waterproof trousers and a jacket are better for long days.
• Gloves — for the cold, and for protection.
• Closed shoes, never flip-flops.
• Sunscreen and sunglasses: the sun at altitude burns quickly, even when the air is cool.
• A dry bag or plastic bags for your phone, passport and papers.
• Your licence and International Driving Permit if you are riding yourself — see do you need an IDP to ride in Vietnam?

So when should you come?

For the most reliable weather around Dalat, December to April is hard to beat, with March and April the sweet spot for warmth. But there is no bad month to ride here if you start early, pack layers and stay flexible.
